The Delhi Township Board of Trustees conducted a public opinion survey of township residents to determine local sentiment of regulations for the implementation of the recently passed recreational marijuana law. The Township Board intends to utilize the survey results as a basis for their discussion and decision making as it relates to land use, and if these types of businesses should be allowed to locate in Delhi Township and if so, where.

Under the new Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act (MRTMA), it is now legal for people over the age of 21 to use, possess, cultivate and sell marijuana and industrial hemp in Michigan. This new law gives local governments the ability to allow, prohibit or limit the number of marijuana establishments within its boundaries. The MRTMA already restricts marijuana establishments from operating within 1,000 feet of an existing school, church and areas zoned exclusively for residential usage.

Surveys were mailed to each of the township’s 10,625 registered voting households in early April and responses were collected until Monday, May 20, 2019. In total, 2,773 (26.1%) households responded to the survey.

Byrum & Fisk Advocacy Communications assisted Delhi Township in developing a short survey to gauge resident opinions about marijuana establishments locating and operating in the township. The survey tested the following questions:

  • Do you support allowing marijuana microbusinesses in Delhi Township?
  • Do you support allowing marijuana growers in Delhi Township?
  • Do you support allowing marijuana processors in Delhi Township?
  • Do you support allowing marijuana retailers (dispensaries) in Delhi Township?
  • Do you support allowing secure marijuana transporters in Delhi Township?
  • Do you support allowing marijuana safety compliance facilities in Delhi Township?

Residents opposed all six marijuana establishments locating in Delhi Township. However, there were responses from residents that if any of these businesses were allowed in the township, residents would be more comfortable with them operating in commercial and agricultural areas, excluding the Cedar Street corridor.
