Townships Awarded as 'Green Communities'
Seven townships - the highest number ever - were honored this week for their efforts to become more sustainable communities. The Michigan Green Communities Challenge awarded 29 local units with gold, silver, and bronze rankings at an awards ceremony, plus one honorable mention award. Pittsfield Charter Township (Washtenaw Co.) and Delhi Charter Township (Ingham Co.) received the gold ranking; Meridian Charter Township (Ingham Co.), Clinton Charter Township (Macomb Co.), and Delta Charter Township (Eaton Co.) received the silver ranking; and West Bloomfield Charter Township (Oakland Co.) and Hartland Township (Livingston Co.) received the bronze ranking. Each year, Michigan Green Communities - a network of local government organizations (including the Michigan Townships Association) and Michigan state department staff that collaborate to promote innovative solutions and move sustainability initiatives forward - ask communities to participate in the program measuring their progress toward meeting current and future energy needs.
